In the Waiting Line

I’ve got one more week before I’ll be back at work, and I’m kind of looking forward to it, and kind of not. The part where I get to sleep until 8:45, wake up, turn my computer on, and be “at work” is really nice. Really nice. Also the part where I can close my computer, make dinner for Special K and myself, and catch up on our respective days when he gets home (or whenever it’s dinner time – whichever comes first). I like that part a lot, too. However, this is a pretty big change from the way my life normally is – I often have after-work plans with friends (when I’m not drowning in work and staying late, that is), and I’m just more active. It’s not that I need to have some kind of “fabulous” lifestyle where I’m always doing fabulous things, always on-the-go, but we live just outside a fantastic city, and I don’t like not taking advantage of all the great things it has to offer. The main problem lately has been, clearly, my health and mobility, so I guess this is just frustration and restlessness talking. I’m ready to get connected again, to explore DC more, and to feel like I’m more a part of the world than I am now.

The cable is out here, which means that the cable modem is out, which means that I can do precisely squat online, and it’s putting a bit of a damper on my work today. I do have some things I can do, but it’s not quite the same. Alas…it’s kind of increasing that feeling of isolation, so that may account for my malaise today. I did, however, go for a long walk today (35 minutes), and although I’m unreasonably tired after it, it felt good to go out and move. I’m also making some positive changes regarding my health; being so sloth-like recently hasn’t been good for me. (Yes, there has been a good reason for it. That doesn’t really change things, though.) I do go through these phases every so often where I’ll renew my dedication to looking after my health and well-being, as anyone who has read this blog for any amount of time has probably determined. It’s usually work that interferes, as it does with many things. Our new office building has a gym in it, though, so that’s quite nice. I like my gym and I love going to the pool, but there’s something about proximity that you just can’t replace. Besides, P, S, Special K and I have already talked about climbing Old Rag again next fall, and I’ll need to be in better shape so that I don’t feel so out of shape the next time.

My little 35-minute walk resulted in a 3-hour nap. Three hours. My goodness, what’s that about? Special K pointed out, quite reasonably, that perhaps my body is still healing. But dang it¸ I don’t have any more open wounds or stitches, people! I should be on the off ramp of the convalescent highway, not still stuck at an interchange!

Ah well – good thing I still have this week to rest up before returning to work.

And if you want a good laugh, just click here. It’s short, but worth it.
